Litigation & Dispute Resolution

Civil litigation in Cyprus is a discipline of its own. The district courts in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, and Famagusta each operate with their own procedural rhythms and judicial expectations. Success requires not only knowledge of the law but a deep understanding of how each court approaches case management, evidence, and advocacy.

The firm handles the full spectrum of civil and commercial disputes. Contractual claims, debt recovery, shareholder disputes, professional negligence, defamation, and inheritance battles all come through the doors. Each case begins with the same hard question: what are the prospects of success, and is litigation the right path or merely the most obvious one?

Before issuing proceedings, the firm assesses the strength of the claim or defence, the quality of available evidence, and the counterparty’s ability to satisfy any judgment. Optimism has its place, but it is not a legal strategy. Clients are told what they need to hear, not what they might want to hear. If settlement offers a better outcome than litigation, that advice is given clearly and without reservation.

Where court proceedings become necessary, the firm handles every stage. Drafting pleadings that define the parameters of the dispute. Managing disclosure of documents often the moment when cases are won or lost. Preparing witnesses for the intensity of cross-examination. Presenting oral and written submissions that distil complex facts into coherent legal arguments. And, when judgment is obtained, pursuing enforcement through writs of execution, garnishee orders, or insolvency proceedings.

The Cypriot court system provides for interim remedies where urgent protection is needed. Freezing injunctions to prevent dissipation of assets. Interim possession orders to recover property. Disclosure orders to trace assets or identify wrongdoers. The firm has extensive experience in obtaining and opposing such relief, often at short notice and in circumstances where every day matters.

Appeals lie to the Supreme Court of Cyprus, which sits in Nicosia. Appearing at this level requires not only mastery of the trial record but also the ability to frame arguments that engage with precedent and principle. The firm has appeared before the Supreme Court in numerous appeals, both civil and procedural.

Litigation is not the only path. Cyprus has embraced alternative dispute resolution, and the firm holds mediation accreditation. Many cases resolve more efficiently and more satisfactorily through a structured negotiation than through a contested trial. The skill lies in knowing which path serves the client’s interests, and in pursuing that path with commitment either way.
